Wales Is Not A Region....Do You Hear Me BBC?
Hello there. Hope you’re feeling well.
One of the major bugbears of mine with regard to the “British” treatment of Wales is the idea essentially that it is a region not a country whereas it is the complete opposite. Consequently descriptions and stories may give the reader/viewer/listener an impression that a particular regional thing is Cymruwide.
A good example is the Welsh “accent”. Before I moved to Wales in 1997 I had it in my head that there was only one Welsh accent. Now I’ve been here for so many year and have been educated accordingly I know that the Swansea accent is different to the Cardiff accent which is different to the Rhondda which is different to the North Walian accents which includes accents with a distinct hint of scouse in it.
The point being when I see a TV programme that includes a Welsh character you either hear a standardised accent or an accent heightened for comic effect (the audience hear being a non Welsh one).
Anyway there is another example where you can make an accurate guess that the writer is English.
